What is Brittle Bone Disease?
Brittle bone disease, with its medical name of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), occurs when there is an abnormal production of collagen which results in bones that break easily. Children can have this disease at birth. While they may experience numerous fractures and shattered bones, the severity of this disorder gets less as the child grows older.
Abnormal Collagen Production
Collagen is the primary protein component of the bone and is required for bone creation, development and strength. Its abnormal or inadequate production in the body can result in a genetic condition called brittle bone disease.
Different Symptoms
There are eight types of brittle bone disease or osteogenesis imperfecta that can result from abnormally low production levels of collagen. This disorder isn’t limited to just broken bones. OI Types 1 to 8 can exhibit different symptoms that can vary from mild to very severe. People suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta also experience poor muscle tone, hearing disorders, discolorization of the sclera or white of the eyes, weak teeth, and shorter than average height.
Abnormal Spine Curvature
People suffering from brittle bone disease commonly have scoliosis or the abnormal curvature of the spinal column. To correct this disorder, sufferers are often required to wear back braces which produce both discomfort and embarrassment to the wearer.
Overcautious Children
Children who have osteogenesis imperfecta tend to be more cautious due to the brittleness of their bones. Because of this, they are scared to try out new activities to avoid any injuries that can shatter their fragile bones. Most children who suffer from this disorder will choose to be within their comfort or safety zone, missing out on many things they will want to do.
Fracture Frequencies
The occurrence of fractures depends on what OI Type the sufferer has. People with Type 1 or mild OI may experience some bone fractures in their lifetime. People who suffer from severe forms of brittle bone disease may experience up to hundreds of fractures.
Indeed, brittle Bones disease is a worrisome condition especially if it affects children. Unlike a simple headache that can be easily relieved by a pain medication you bought from Canada Drugs Store or a local US pharmacy, this condition would require various treatments so it can be managed effectively.
